RADIO HOST (Canadian): We are happy to welcome Dr. Elaine Page to our show, who is an orthopaedic doctor here in Toronto. As a foot specialist, she is going to discuss what to do and what not to do when buying running shoes. Welcome to the show Dr. Page.
DOCTOR (Canadian): Thank you for having me.
RADIO HOST: So, how important is it to choose a good pair of running shoes?
DOCTOR: It’s essential whether you’re a pro-runner or a beginner. Let me start off by providing some tips on what to think about when choosing a pair of shoes. The first thing you want to do is consider what you’re going to use your running shoes for. For example, joggers and runners need different kinds of shoes because the stress placed on the foot isn’t the same. The type of ground you run on and how much distance you usually cover are other important factors to think about. Knowing this information beforehand will help the salesperson select shoes that better meet your needs.
RADIO HOST: Okay.
DOCTOR: Another tip is to buy your shoes after 4pm. You see, our feet swell up over the course of the day, so if you buy running shoes in the morning, they might end up fitting tightly in the evening.
RADIO HOST: Okay. How about when we actually try the shoes on? Any advice on that?
DOCTOR: Sure. The first thing you want to do is have the salesperson measure both your feet.
RADIO HOST: Both of them?
DOCTOR: That’s right. Your feet are actually slightly different sizes, so if you only measure the smaller foot, it could cause discomfort later on for the larger one. Once you’ve had your feet measured, have the salesperson bring you a variety of shoes…don’t rush! You should try on…oh, at least six or seven pairs. And don’t forget that you should lace your shoes all the way to the top to make sure your ankle is well supported.
RADIO HOST: And then walk around to test them out?
DOCTOR: If it’s possible, it’s actually better to try lightly jogging around the store. You’ll want to make sure that you feel no tightness or pressure as you move around. Always choose shoes that feel comfortable immediately. If they hurt in the store, don’t buy them.
RADIO HOST: Got it. Any final words of wisdom for our listeners?
DOCTOR: If you’re not sure about what kind of shoes are best for you, it’s a good idea to consult your doctor to have your feet assessed. Doctors can evaluate the shape of your feet and make recommendations on shoe type.
RADIO HOST: I’ve certainly learned a lot from our conversation, as I’m sure our listeners have as well. Thank you Dr. Page for all your time.
