There might be some people who think that the importance of being able to work with other people decreased than before. However, I personally disagree with the above idea for the two subsequent reasons. First, the importance of communication increased because of the development of the main industry. Second, the number of high-education people increased, so it became necessary to be able to get along well with other people in the workplace.
To begin with, since the form of the main industry has changed, it became important to be able to communicate well with others. To be specific, as technology developed, the imortance of tertiary industry increased, wheareas that of primary and secondary industry decreased. Also, since service industries are main job area of tertiary industry, it became important to get along well with others including co-workers and customers. According to a survey done by AFS, it has been proved that as the main industry transfered to tertiary industry from primary and secondary industry, the frequency of communication between co-workers increased about 80%. This supports the idea that it became more important to be able to work with others than before.
Second, as the college entrance rate has increased, social skills became important in job market. This is due to the fact that when the number of high-education people increases, it becomes difficult to evaluate employees only by their grades, so companies started to evaluate employees by their ability to get along with their co-workers rather than their GPA. Let me introduce my personal story as an example. I applied for Google in this year, and I finally could pass the interview even though I actually had poor GPA. Several months after joining Google, I asked the interviewer why they decided to employ me. Then, he replied that, since there are too many high-education people so that they cannot decide employees by their GPA, they examined the ability to work with others in Google. I seemed to be most extroverted among the interviewees, and this is the reason why they selected me as as a successful candidate.
In conclusion, as rates of tertiary industry and the number of high-education people increase, it became important to get along well with co-workers in the workplace. In this regard, I strongly believe that it became more critical to be able to work with other people than it was before. |
