▶ Your Answer :
The reading passage contends that the genetically modified
crops have some benefits to human. On the other hand, the lecturer brings up
several points to contradict this argument.
First, the lecturer argues that GM crops are not realistic solution
of world hunger. This is because world farmers already produce more amount of crops
yields than the amount that whole people in the world could eat. However, the problem
is that the production is not distributed equally. Therefore, if GM crops
increased the amount of crops yields, some people could not access to the
crops. This casts doubt on the reading passage’s claim that GM crops can be a
solution of starving.
Second, according to the lecturer, price of GM crops would
not be reduced. She predicts that costs would be high. The reason is that
inventing new GM crops needs billions of dollars. Therefore, the inventors
would want to increase the prices almost 5 times to gain profits. In addition,
GM crops need more water than original ones, and the price of water is added to
prices, also. This counter the reading passage’s argument that GM crops could
reduce the price of food.
The final point of the lecturer is that GM crops could make
same problem until now. This is supported by the fact that bananas and tomatoes
which is used to make vaccines are spoiled in warm weather quickly. Therefore,
it needs to keep in cool environment and it is difficult to store and transport
too. This refutes the reading passage’s assertion that the GM crops can help
that vaccines are made more widely available.
