Q. today's children are ruder than they were fifty years ago
Undoubtedly, being polite plays a significant role in people's daily lives in many of the places where they play or work. Some people think that today's children are ruder than they were fifty years ago while others do not. Both sides may have their own reasons to support their views. If I were asked, I would say children in the past were politer. There are several reasons as follows.
To begin with, competition in every place made today's children rude. In Korea, children have to compete with others from elementary schools to universities. They are forced to outdo others to succeed in life. Adults teach them to work hard to win a contest or be ranked at the top in school. For example, when I was in middle school, I liked play a soccer or games hoping that I could make a lot of friends and mingle well with them. However, my parents encourage me to spend more time studying hard instead of playing activities. Naturally, I stared to spent the whole day studying all academic subjects hoping that I could outdo others. I treated my classmates as rivals and became indifferent to others. I often yelled at my parents because I was stressed from the competition.
In addition, in the past, respecting others was likely to bring about a better financial result in life. People in the past had to work together to cultivate more outcome from farming. This is because agriculture was the main industry. For example, when my grand father was in elementary school, he had to take care of cows which were needed for farming. To be specific, he had to learn how to feed cows and mow the lawn in the farm from adults and the adults also encouraged him to cooperate with others for more efficient work. Naturally, he became more polite and respected adults.
All things considered, I strongly believe that the children in the past were more likely to respected others than today's children for the reasons I have mentioned above. All in all, the importance of being polite cannot be overestimated in life.
