There has been an argument regarding this issue of whether universities
should give the same amount of money to facilities for sports as they give to
their university libraries. Some people maintain that universities should
equally invest the same amount of money for their students’ sports as they
spend for their libraries. From my perspective, however, I firmly disagree with
the statement. In this essay, I will present two reasons to validate my
position.
To begin, the primary purpose of universities is to educate students for their major, not to improve their fitness. In order to estimate the proper amount of finance to invest, we need
to measure investment value. From this point of view, determining which one has a higher value between sports centers and libraries should be considered. Apart from faculties related to sports science, students generally go to a university not to do sports but to learn their major. Therefore, universities’ investment should primarily focus on offering the best services for education. In my experience, when I was an undergraduate student, the university was planning to replace one of the university’s libraries with a sports center. Soon after, many students opposed the idea as they thought that maintaining the facility for their studying was more beneficial than building a new sports center. This experience supports the stance that universities should give more money to their libraries as the average student considers that libraries are more valuable than sports centers on campus.
On top of that, spending money on building a university library is more profitable than building a sports center. Possible profits resulted from the investment are a crucial factor in a decision to invest. Considering the results of each, by supporting university libraries, the universities can enhance the educational services for their students, which attracts future students by good studying environment. On the other hand, giving money to university sports centers is not as profitable as giving to libraries because university sports centers are not a substantial attraction for students to choose their university. For instance, Harvard University is one of the prestigious universities where most intelligent students from all over the world want to study. The reason for that is the university has a superior reputation for outstanding educational supports such as faculties, libraries, and laboratories. Nobody knows the sports center of Harvard but people know the history of the library on campus. This can support the opinion that improving educational infrastructure, such as a library, is more attractive for the future students. Thus, universities should spend more money to support their libraries than sports centers.
In summation, I strongly believe that universities should give more money to their libraries than their students’ sports for two reasons: First, the main purpose of universities is to give the best studying atmosphere. Second, as improving educational services is more attractive for the future students, universities should invest more money in their libraries. |
