▶ Your Answer : Sometimes, teachers firmly believe that
they do not have to change their knowledge and simply be satisfied with what
they already know. However, I believe all of the teachers should be required to
update their knowledge every five years, or even shorter periods. This is because
established beliefs tend to be change and government is altering educational plans
these days.
To
begin with, world is exceptionally fast-paced nowadays. In fact, according to
University of Minnesota, new discoveries are made in every ten seconds and
firmly established knowledge is rapidly replaced by other facts. Therefore,
teachers must be aware of such situation and should be willing to alter their
established beliefs or information. When I was in high school, Mr. Walker, my
government teacher, was a highly intelligent individual. On the other hand, he
was too confident about himself that he was not willing to alter his
perspectives. When one of his students questioned during his lecture about
particular concept, he said his saying was law and he would never attempt to acquire
new information. From this experience, I began to realize that some teachers
are overconfident that they will not be able to fully adapt in such fast-paced
environment.
On
top of that, Department of Education is initiating to alter the topics that
teachers are covering in order to assimilate into fast-moving society. This
unique trend is illustrated very well in the study conducted by the University
of Wisconsin. According to its report, more than thirty percent of the
established outlines, which teachers supposed to be cover, are changing these
days. Because the teacher’s first and foremost responsibility is to educate
children and provide his or her students with accurate and useful knowledge,
teachers should be willing to update their information. For instance, I have
always thought that the one and only cause of the global warming is excessive
amount of carbon dioxide. This is because I always have learned in this way by
my teachers. However, starting last year, my teacher began to address multiple
causes of global warming during the lecture, and I was able to broaden my perspectives.
Therefore, I now understand certain waste management and agricultural practices
can also aggravate the problem of global warming. If my teacher had not
attained novel knowledge, I would still know that the abundant amount of the
carbon dioxide is the sole cause of global warming. This situation effectively shows
that students can significantly benefit by acquiring new information which
teacher taught.
In
this regard, I think all teachers should be required to update their knowledge
every five years.
