Some people think that understanding the past is
important when dealing with current or future problems. However, in my opinion,
learning about the past does not have any relevance with our problems today and
in the future for the challenges we face and the solution to them (solutions)
are different from the past.
To begin with, the difficulties that we face today are not the same from
the past. World changes so quickly that the problems also are continuously
changing. So, understanding the past has nothing to do with tackling the
impediments that we face today or in the future. For instance, the common
problem that my grandfather had in his generation was to get rid of poverty.
Since Korea was so poor back then, people did not have enough food to eat; it
was the problem of the majority. However, the Korean society nowadays no longer
have (has) this as a major problem. Today, people are not struggle for
food, but they are working for different reasons such as higher education,
better jobs and many more. Therefore, even though we have in-depth knowledge
about the past, it will not help us solve the problem that we are currently
facing.
On top of that, the solutions that we had in the past to solve the
obstacles are not valuable anymore. The norm of the society changes as well.
Something that was considered as a common sense before can be considered as a
crime nowadays. For example, when my mother was young, it was normal for the
parents to punish their children for any misbehavior. The punishments involved
physical hitting, but no one stopped or questioned the parents for doing so,
because it was accepted by the society. However, if you physically hurt your
child these days even with good intentions, you might end up in jail. Hence,
referring to the past in order to solve the current problem is not a good idea.
To sum up, as time passes, everything changes
including the problems and also the solutions. In this regard, I firmly
believe that studying the past is not beneficial in solving the current and
future problems.
