▶ Topic : Advantage of Wave-energy facilities |
|
|
▶ Your Answer : The
reading and the lecture are both about wave-energy facilities, which are
receiving attention as alternative energy. Fossil fuel is not sustainable
energy because of its limitation of the reserves and environmental issues, so
people are finding new energy that can substitute fossil fuel. The author of
the reading thinks that wave farms have a great deal of advantages, so that it
is suitable for the future energy. However the lecturer casts doubts on the
claims made in the article. She thinks that wave farms have more disadvantages
and advantages.
First of all, the author claims that wave farms are incredibly
reliable generators of power. He notes that they use wave which is constant and
predictable. This point is challenged by the lecturer. She suggests that expecting
machine to be always regular and controllable is an illusion. She elaborates on
this by mentioning possibility of power generators to have technical problems
such as breakdown or malfunctioning.
Secondly, the author states that wave-energy facilities don’t damage
environment. He argues that the process of producing energy by them doesn’t
discharge pollutants into the air. This argument is rebutted by the lecturer.
She says that wave energy also have environmental problem. Furthermore, she
points out that the converter need chemicals such as lubricants, which is
highly toxic to marine environment to make the machine operate smoothly.
Finally, the author mentions that wave farms do not negatively
affects the scenery of the surrounding landscape. He describes that the
converters are very small compared to other types of power and it is almost
invisible while it floats or just below the surface of the water. The lecturer,
on the other hand, feels that wave energy converter also damage the natural
beauty. She says that the converters have bright color. Those need to be highly
visible to get easily spotted by ships or vessels. |
