The wrtier contends that creating bicycle lanes would be beneficial in many ways. However, the lecturer claims that bicycle lanes brought about negavtive results by providing a case study.
First, the lecturer asserts that when the bicycle lanes were initiated, they did not bring intended environmental benefit because after people tried byclying, they realized that it is physically demanding. Consequentially, the number of people who bicycle decreased. This contrasts the reading passage which states that the environment would improve because more people would cycle ;as a result, less harmful emissions would be released by cars.
Second, the lecturer argues that drivers waited and expected bike lanes to reduce traffic. However, after the initiation of bike lanes, nobody was cycling on bike lanes as they realized how hard it is to cycle, even worse traffic exacerbated. Therefore, drivers were angry and more stressed. This counters the writer's claim that since more people would ride bicycles using bike lanes, the number of drivers would decrease;thus, traffic congestion would be minimized.
Lastly, the lecturer claims that the number of accidents involving a driver and a cycler actually increased. This is because people who cycle felt safe on bike lanes,so they were not worried about getting injured. However, when drivers opend their doors hurt them unintentioanlly. This casts doubt on the reading passage which claims that drivers who are unaware of people who cycle hurt them, but by initiating bike lanes, these accidents could be prevented. |
