In Korea, there is a famous maxim ''when you are after forty, you need to be responsible about your face'', meaning that your face shows your pasts when you grow older. However, I believe that judging people based on their first impression is often wrong by two reasons: people try to make a good impression at first time, and appearance changes time to time.
To begin with, first impression is often wrong because people try to make a good impression at first time. Therefore, each time you meet this person you can learn something new about him or her. For example, I had a blind date with a girl. At the first time, I thought she has many positive traits such as kindness, responsibility about her spending, and passion toward her job. However, as time goes by, I perceived it was her pretending, and in reality, she was frantic about luxurious goods, arrogant, and judging people based on how much money they have. This shows that people sometimes disguises their true identity when they meet new people.
In addition, First impression is massively related to one's appearances which can changes. When people are stressed out or have emotional problems, they don't dress the best, resulting in different impression to others. According to a study conducted by Seoul National University, two groups of people commented after they saw a person. Actually, the person was the same but with different outfit: suit, and casual. First group who saw the person with casual outfit said that the guy would earn about twenty grand an year, working as a mediocre job, and not be attractive to females. The other group saw the person with a suit, saying that the guy would earn about eighty grand an year, working as a doctor, or lawyer, and would be very popular to females. This implies that just same person with different attire changes a person's value.
In brief, People are very vulnerable when they judge people when they meet people in first time because of people's trying to make good impression, and appearance. All in all, since it is very hard to assess one's value by their first impression, we need try not to focus too much on one's first impression. |
