A teacher's ability to relate well with students is more important than to give them knowledge. |
Many people think that teacher's best criteria is giving knowledge to the students. In a sence, it is one of the best criteria for teachers but not the best criterion. I would like to claim that teachers relating skill should be more considered than knowledge.
To begin with, it is important that students think what they are learning is fun and interesting enough in order to successfully carry on their study. Without teachers relative relating skill, students would not concentrate on what their learning eventhough the content of teaching is precious. For example, at the last session of my university, i had an introductory psychology class. The knowledge that the professor was trying to give us was informative enough. However, i could not stand the feeling of groggy and tired and then fell a sleep right away. The knowledge did not matter. the point was that i couldn't relate my self to the class activity without the professor's help.
In addition, teachers relating skill is more important because they need to teach students how to actively gain knowledge them selves. For instance, there were many individual institutes around my home town and their teachers were really good in terms of transmitting knowledge in a short amount of time, compare to normal highschool teachers. So i went those kind of institutes to learn history and mathmatics and so forth. Later on, by the time I went to the university, i realized that i am not prepared to think creatively and crtitically whereas i was really good at memorizing things. The point is that I could not generate new ideas dispite the fact that i was trying to gain knowledge like a machine. Teachers need to relate students to the class to teach them how to catch a fish, not to give a fish.
In addition to the amount of knowledge, I would like to mention that people with great teaching skills should work as teachers. People that only have knowledge are better to be reasearchers, not teachers
In conclusion, I have presented three points on why we should care about relating skill of teachers more than just knowledge on the points of interest of students, activeness of students, and aptitude of teachers. The most important thing for the successful teaching is to make students feel more famiiar with things they learn, not to convey knowledge itself.
