It is good to take the most difficult and challenging class. Do you agree or disagree? |
People have different opinions on whether it is good to take the most difficult and challenging class. I agree with the idea for two reasons. First, taking extremely difficult courses lead to a deep and broad knowledge. Second, students who have survived in the course will be able to succeed in other hard courses in school or projects in their companies. Above all, students who took difficult classes will learn more deep and broad knowledge than students who took easier classes. Through a large number of assignments, quizzes and exams, the students recognize what they have leaned, what they don’t know and what they are misunderstanding. These help students determine how and what they should study. When I took Professor Kim’s class in my college, he assigned a lot of homework and quizzes every week. Moreover, my classmates and I had to take exams three times in the semester (which take more than eight hours.)? So, we studied the subject everyday and read the lecture notes and two or three textbooks several times. These enabled us to comprehend the topics almost perfectly. Since course materials and exams are very difficult, students are required to study each subject deeply and broadly. For example, I took an abstract algebra course, which is known as one of the most challenging courses as well as mathematical analysis in the mathematics department. I read the textbook and lecture note, and memorize some definitions and theorems and then solved some exercise problems. I, however, got just a B on the midterm exam. The problem was that I had not understood the subject and exercise problems perfectly. So, for final exam, I read the textbook and lecture notes more than ten times and solved the exercise almost perfectly. Additionally, I visited professor and asked him lots of questions on the course more than five times a week. Consequentially I had gotten an A+. This shows that, in a difficult and challenging course, the professors do not permit the students to get a good grade without having deep understanding. Hence, taking difficult and challenging courses lead to a deep and broad knowledge. After students succeeded in extremely difficult and challenging courses, these experiences would help them throughout their lives in college or company. Their achievements and self-confidence from success in the class will make it possible for them to finish their work when they face very hard courses in college or projects in a company. Assume that one student who took the class was assigned to a project which looks nearly impossible to be done. He has more probability then others who took just average courses and got good grades easily because he already suffered such kind of hard work and know most of skills and knowledge to succeed in the project. In most cases, students in the class are encouraged to study together because the class is almost impossible to survive without helping each other. This will enhance their skills for group work such as communicating and persuading other people. For instance, when I took the class of Professor Kim which I mentioned above, I gathered my friends who were in the same course to organize a study group. The study group had five members. For about four months, we learned a lot of things from each other. Some were good at some topic while others were good at other topics. So, we mentored each other. Moreover, we learned how to understand, communicate and work effectively with other people. In conclusion, I agree that it is good to take the most difficult and challenging class for the reasons that I have mentioned above. First, students who took difficult courses will learn more deeply and broadly than students who took easier courses. Second, after students succeeded in difficult and challenging courses, these experiences would help them throughout their lives in college or company. |
