Some people say that the news media provide credible information. They insist that it is hard for the news media to distort the true, since many people monitor lots of media. However, I disagree with the statement that the news media provide viewers with accurate and unbiased information. This is because the news media is related to its own stakes and make stories more clolorful. To begin with, the news media does not offer unbiased information, because the media has its own stakes. Major corporations own the news media and are interested in portraying reality and current events in a way favorable to their interests. It is especially true when certain political party and a major company that has its own media is related to a story. The best example is Iraq War. When the war broke out, the news media in United States depicted the war as a way to attain world peace. In contrast, other countries mainly showed on-the-spot broadcasting of brutal scenes and describe the United States as ruthless invader. The diffrence in news coverage of the war highlights how partial and biased news companies are. In addition, the news media is untrustworthy, because the media often make stories dramatic in order to gain viewers popularity. it is important fot the news media to attract more readers or viewers, because the more viewers they have, the more money they can make. For example, a news media in Korea reported that kimchi was produced in very filthy and unclear environments. After the media made the report public, customers stopped buying kimchi for a while and companies involved in the kimchi industry had to close down. Later, it is found that the report was exaggerated and the media had to apologize to viewers about the ridiculous article. This showed that the news media always does not offer reliable information. In conclusion, I firmly believe that the news media is an unreliable source of biased information for the reasons that I mentioned above. First, They belong to commercial motivated groups. Second, They make stories advocative. It would be wised for viewers to question about the news media's stories. |
