The lecturer explains three
negative aspects of Globalization, the process which deletes difficulties in
international trade, while the reading passage casts doubt on it.
First, the speaker argues
that, globalization makes original offices to close down. Usually, the
companies come from other countries are there to use cheaper labor and
lenient tax laws. However, by doing this, the workers in original factories may
lose their jobs. Actually, since 2000, 5 million high paying factory job has
eliminated because of globalization. This strongly contradicts the assortment
made by the reading passage that globalization can make abroad companies
invest in the creation of factories, hire employees from local population,
and lead to stronger middle class with higher wage.
Secondly, the lecturer claims
that, many companies from abroad produce reverse engineered products, which
is called “knockoff”. Companies look other’s product and learn how it is
made. They usually copy it, and sell it cheaply. It can cause negative effect
to domestic companies running at abroad, since their secret technology is known
to other company and consumers may tend to buy it since it is cheaper. This
casts doubt on reading passage’s argument that globalization may lead to easy
access in new technology, by education and training provided among locals.

Finally, the professor states that,
a lot of countries add import tax on products, called VAT, to make their
domestic products more competitive. So, it is hard for consumers to buy another
country’s product in cheaper price. For example, in some countries of Europe,
VAT is over 20%, and even in the case of luxury products, it includes much
higher tax. This completely opposes the idea made by the reading passage that
consumers are now not limited to the few dominating domestic companies and can
choose products from the cheapest producers worldwide. |
