▶ Your Answer :
Both the reading passage and the listening
passage discuss the topic of the Chevalier de seignglt' memoir. The author of
the reading passage argues that the memoir has lots of controversies and this memoir is distorted whereas the
lecturer of listening passage contradicts the reading. The two passages each
provide three reasons to support their argument.
To begin with, according to the article, the memoir shows that
the Chevalier was rich and spent a lot of
money on gambling and parties, but historians discovered
that (evidence that) the Chevalier frequently (used to) borrowed money from merchants,
meaning that he was not wealthy. However,
the speaker argues that the Chevalier was not
poor, rather he was rich. The reason why he
borrowed a considerable
amount of money from merchants was to convert his assets
into cash.
Furthermore, it is also argued that the Chevalier
wrote down the memoir which is a written record of
conversations of (is written down conversation with) famous writers and
king, many years after he actually conversed with them. (is dubious in that the
Chevlier write down this conversation many years after he converse with them.)
On the contrary, the lecturer points out that it is possible to write down the conversations
(part) since Chevalier had a habit of
recording his daily life at night. Also, witnesses confirmed
that the Chevalier kept a journal. (had
consult journals.)
Finally, the reading passage points out that
Chevalier escaped from a notorious prison in Venice and he provided jailer bribes
in order to escape. (run away from cell. ) Also, by using a piece
of tool to make a hole in the ceiling and climbing
through the roof, he ran away from the
Venetian prison. On the other hand, the professor says that Chevalier did not bribe the jailer. (offer jailer with bribe.) In
addition, His cell's ceiling was repaired, which means that he could not escape
from the prison.
