Opinions might be divided over whether universities
should spend more money for libraries than sports. People of diverse ages and
from different walks of life may take diverse positions on this controversial issue.
Personally I agree with the stance that
universities should spend more money for libraries than sports because it is
more appropriate for universities’ role.
To begin with, the role of universities is educating
students and enhancing their intelligent ability intellect. Thus, in a university
campus, the library is an essential facility. If
there is a good library, students can study in a better condition and achieve
more. When students do not understand a lesson in a class, they should can find reference books in the library and catch
learn about them before they give questions to
their professor. Also, when they study by themselves, they can widen their
intellectual horizons. It is why libraries are needed. Opponents of my
perspective claim that sports is are quite
important because when students stay healthy, they can learn more effectively.
Advocates’ claims may
sound reasonable on the surface. However, if we take a closer look at their
contentions, the rationale for their assertion lacks logic in many ways. Moreover,
there are some examples that can debunk their claim.
Let’s take
the Korea University of Technology and Education as an example. This university
recently built a new library named Dasan, because
the previous library was so antiquated. After building the new library, the
employment rate of the university is got higher
than ever before. It shows how important a library is.
In addition, beyond the example that I mentioned,
there are many articles which can support my argument. They expressed doubts
that are similar to my point of view. A few weeks ago, I had a chance to read
an article from the Dong-A Daily News that is related to the topic. It
described the results of a survey conducted by the Samsung Economic Research
Institute social science researchers with more than five hundred university
administrators working at the welfare office of universities in Seoul as respondents. According to the article, of the 500
university administrators surveyed, more than 80
percent of them answered that there are many complaints that are related to the
libraries, and it’s
likely that when libraries are advanced, the students would
feel more satisfaction in overall university facilities. They went on say that
this means that students think that the library is the most important facility
in the university because it is related to the students’ learning.
As mentioned above, based on the examples, I can
conclude that universities should spend more money for libraries than sports.
