The
reading and the lecture both talk about whether or not hydroelectricity is
beneficial. The reading states that there are three reasons why the method is the
most efficient way of generating energy. However, the lecturer argues that the
reasons given in the reading are neither convincing nor complete.
First
of all, the reading states that hydroelectric dam is very economical. On the
contrary, the lecturer argues that the statement is false. This is because that other costs are very expensive although the low cost of it is true. For example, they
have to research the place before building the dams. Also, the cost of
constructing dam is higher than they expected.
Next,
in the reading, the author argues that hydroelectric dams are very eco-friendly.
In contrast, the lecturer claims that the notion is erroneous. The reason for
this is that hydroelectric dams actually release same amount of greenhouse
gases with burning fossil fuels. For instance, the dams have to float in a large
area, and many plants release a lot of greenhouse gases through decomposing
in that area.
Finally,
the reading goes on to explain that this method does not have an effect on wildlife.
On the other hand, the professor, in his lecture, asserts that the idea does
not make sense. This is because that only some species, such as salmon, are strong
enough to pass through dams. However other species like SHAD are not strong enough to swim across dams. Consequently, their population is gradually reduced.
