▶ Your Answer :In most countries, college education is regarded as a prerequisite for success, enabling one to earn money and honor. However, from the perspective of a senior in a college, I believe it is not the prominent factor for one's life to flourish for three reasons. To begin with, cost-efficiency is the primary ground for my thesis. College students in Korea have to pay more than 5000 dollars per a semester. In total, at least 40000 dollars. However, when they get the job, they get less salary than the workers of same age who did not attend the high-level education and got their jobs immediately after the graduation of high schools. As the sophisticated education does not guarantee more wage, I think it is not an essential determinant for success in life. Secondly, what students have learned in college is often useless in their career. Liberal arts majors like philosophy and anthropology do not assist students to obtain a high-wage job unless they continue Ph.D program in schools. Even if there are majors useful for having professional occupations like economy or engineering, these subjects can be learned without the enrollment. For instance, OCW, a complimentary Open Courseware program, enables the public to study the academic subjects. By taking OCW courses, people can get professional knowledge of medicine, economy, and so on, without enrollinng in colleges. As there is an alternative for university education, it is not a crucial factor for one's professional career. For the third reasons, contrary to the convention of old days, nowadays, the scholastic superiority does not guarantee social honor. In the past, as there are not much high school graduates advancing to higher education, the scarcity of bachelor's degree was greater. However, in the present, as numerous students apply for university and the number of it has been augmented for a long period of time, there are numerous alumni having the degree, making the scarcity lower than before. Due to cost-ineffectiveness and decreased value of the degree and the existence of alternatives, in these days, university education became the factor irrelevant to one's success. I would like to advise high school students to get a job immediately after the graduation so that they do not waste their time and money. |
