Some people might think that the young generation at present help others more than those from the past generation. However, in my opinion, This is not true. Young people in the past help others more than now. This is because birthrate has been gotten lower and lower. Children nowadays have no or only one sibling. This cannot help but affect their personality to help others.
To begin with, young people in this society have no or only one sibling. Because they do not have siblings, there are little opportunities to help and be helped for them. People who have not little helped others in family are less likely to help others in a society. Imagine that a child who is 4 or 5 years old in a middle-class family does not have a sibling, so he or she cannot have experiences to help others or be helped by others. Would it be possible that he or she becomesa person who is good at helping others? This is highly doubtful. For example, there was a poll conducted by Volunteering Center for Seoul Society with more than 200 volunteers as respondents. The purpose of the survey is to understand what is the most important factor that makes them volunteers. The majority of them responded that memories from experiences of helping others leaded led them to volunteer. An overwhelming 80% pointed that especially exposure to situation to help siblings in their childhood was the most critical factor to decide to volunteer. This proves that the more children have siblings, the more they are likely to help others later. In this regard, young people in this society tend to help others less than those who have more siblings in the past. Moreover, it is necessary to have empathy to help others. People who have grown with no siblings are likely to have less empathy than those who have grown with siblings. There was a study conducted by Seoul National University. This study was about characteristics of long time volunteers. The researchers found that most of them have higher level of empathy ability. While common adults got 45 points in the test for empathy, long time volunteers got 78 points in average in the same test. In addition, this study showed that those who got more than 80 points in the test had grown with more than 2 two siblings. Considering 1 of 2 children has no siblings today, it is hard to expect young generation nowadays helps other more than in the past.
To sum up, taking the fact that today’s children grow with no siblings into account, they are never less likely to help others more than those who had many siblings in the past. Since they do not have much experience to help others at home and do not have much empathy, I totally believe that the younger generation at present help others less than those from the past generation.
