Some people believe that it is better to provide students with grades because this can improve their learning, while others do not think this way. Both sides may have their own reasons to support their views. I strongly believe that it is preferable to give students grades in order to promote their learning for several reasons.
To start with, providing students with grades can contribute a competitive atmosphere in class. This is due to the fact that when teachers put forward grades, students would compare their grades to other students' ones and thus try to make more efforts to improve academic performances. Accordingly, such a competitive atmosphere can serve as a motivator to encourage students to brush up on their intellectual abilities. For instance, many research teams, including the Tokyo Research Center, analzed data from two schools. One group consisted of students who were given scores from 'A' to 'F' according to their performances during semesters in their school, whereas the other group was made up of students who could know whether they failed or passed when they took exams in their school. The researchers found that the former was more likely to show greater academic skills on the Tokyo Intellectual Test than the latter. They added that most of the first group who got lower scores during a middle term, could be motivated by comparing with others who , while, at the same time, trying to go out of their limbs. This clearly shows that putting forward grades and scores can give students an impetus to help them study harder.
On top of that, suggesting grades can give students a valuable opportunity to realize their mistakes. To be more specific, when teachers provide students with scores, they can easily comprehend which subjects they have to delve into more in depth, whereas pass-fail systems can not exactly explain students' mistakes and drawbacks, which may deter them from correcting their flaws. Naturally, students who are unable to get their scores would fall behind in schoolwork. For example, when I was a university student, I took a class related to mathematics. During those times, my professor just let me know what I failed in his class, not explaining which chapters I sholud study more specifically. Naturally, I could not figure out problems and ways to compensate for my problems, making it difficult for me to correct my demerits related to engineering mathematics. In the end, I just made efforts to improve differential calculus abilities and thus repeated significant mistakes concerning engineering mathematics during a next semester. If I had been suggested grades that clearly indicated my flaws about engineering mathematic skills, I would have made up for my obstalces and show a better dexerterity in the semester. All things considered, I firmly believe that offering students grades can suggest significant academic benefits, because this can enable them to precisely understand their mistakes, and lead to a rivalrous environment in class.
