In the reading
passage, there is ample support for the author's claim that electronic medical
records are more advantageous than paper files. However, the professor in the
lecture gives several reasons as a rebuttal to the author's point.
First, the professor
insists that it is difficult to transfer the records electronically to other
doctors without delay. This is because health centers and hospitals use
different system for recording patient information. In this sense, 70%
physicians in America said that they have undergone difficulties when they
tried to access other physicians' records. This counters the reading passage's
assertion that medical records can be easily transmitted by using electronic
devices.
Next, the professor
contends that electronic medical records can be accessed easily and remotely.
In 2007 and in USA, one hacker stole 200,000 patients' medical records without
tracking by a security system because the system simply could be manipulated.
This casts doubt on the reading passage's claim that using the way of
electronic record has advantages: security and keeping track of people's access
the records.
Finally, the professor argues that electronic
medical records can be easily damaged. If there is a malfunction of a computer
with medical records, or if a person mistakenly uses the computer such as
clicking a delete button, electronic records can just disappear. This refutes
the reading passage's suggestion that electronic medical records can be safely
kept rather than paper records. |
