▶ Your Answer :
Opinions maybe divided over whether it is
better to develop many various skills than to focus on only one skill. People
of various ages and different walks of life take diverse positions on this
controversial issue. We cannot deny the fact that expertise plays an important
role in our lives. Personally, therefore, I agree that it is better for people
to concentrate on only one skill than to develop diverse skills for the two
reasons: expertise and job opportunity.
First of all, people should develop only
one skill because they need specialized expertise in order to survive a
fiercely society. Therefore, if people focus on developing only one skill, they
can deal with their workloads and thus become successful. Some people argue
that it is important for people to improve different kills. Although their
argument appears to be valid, they are mostly groundless and fall short of
perfection. Moreover, my personal experience can reveal that it is important to
develop a specialized skill. For example, my friend Julia has worked at
large-size company, Samsung and other workers liked her because of her special
skill. She was good at speaking Spanish due to the fact that her major was
Spanish. The fact that she was capable of speaking Spanish made her deal with
the important meeting with a foreign company. As a result, thanks to only one
skill, speaking foreign language, she could go to the extra mile and become
successful in her company. This clearly shows that it is much more important to
improve only one ability rather than develop diverse skills.
Second, focusing on one skill helps people
get a lot of job opportunities. Beyond my personal experience, there are many
articles that can support my argument. They expressed doubts that are similar
to my point of view. I read an editorial from the Dong-A Daily News that is
related to the topic. It describes the result of a survey conducted by Seoul
National University social science researchers with more than 500 CEO in Seoul.
Of 500 people surveyed, 80 percent of them admitted that they preferred people
who are good at only one area to people who are good at diverse areas. They
went on to say that people who focus on only one ability were likely to deal
with their workloads more efficiently. The respondent answered that people who
develop many different skills were unlikely to do their works. This clearly
proves the importance of focusing on one skill.
As mentioned above based on expertise and
job opportunities, I can conclude that people should develop only one skill. |
