Some
people think that the main role of a university professor is to do research
rather than to educate students. However, I strongly argue that the main role
of the professor is to educate students. The concepts of motivation and stress
show this opinion.
First
of all, the professor who teaches students well can increase students’
motivation. This is due to the fact that when professor has a passion in what
they teach, students are more likely to be motivated to improve themselves. They
make more effort into tasks and become responsible for what they have to learn.
Furthermore, this can bring about better outcomes at schools. For instance, my
brother used to be introvert and have no interest in his studies. However,
after he met the professor Kim in the Hong Kong University, he started to
change. He began to have more interests in his studies and participated in
school activities more enthusiastically.
This is because he saw his professor having passion in what he teaches
in the university as an educator.
In
addition, if professor does not have interest in teaching students and just
does his own research, the students will be very stressed out. Students today
live in a competitive world so they always have a lot of work to do. This is
why they are always stressed out. However, if professor does not teach students
well, it will make them more stressed out because student will waste their
money and time. From my experience, when I was in college, one of my professors
does not have any interest in educating students. Although he was very famous
for his many researches, most of the students didn’t want to take his class.
When I took his class, I also felt stressed out because I couldn’t understand
his class well. This experience can apply to students who meet the professor
who only does his research.
To
sum up, it seems to me that the main role of the university professor is to educate
students. The examples of motivation and stress support the argument.
