Some people think that offering students with grades did do not affect students to study in their studies. In my opinion, providing grades
will promote students’ passion for learning. This is because it gives students
confidence and, otherwise, it leads to unfair
judgements of scores.
To begin with, students can gain confidence
and belief that they can have great test scores. The range of the A grade, the
highest grade in Korean universities, is so wide that all students would have
the grade if they did their best. I will illustrate my friend’s story as an
example. When he was a freshman at his university,
he had a micro-economic class. He did not wanted to take the class
because of the fear of his exam, but that was the requisite course for students
who were majoring in economics. However, the professor said that he would give
more A scores to students than the last
semester because he have had gotten many
calls from students that wanted to fix grades. As soon as he heard the
professor’s notification, he got confidence and studied really hard to achieve
the highest point. As a result, he got it. This example shows that grading
systems give students confidence to feel confident.
On top of that, if professors gave absolute
scores to students without grades, it could be unfair. Then, it leads them to
feel depressed. When students noticed that professors did not give grades, they
will study the way to attract the professors’ interest in lieu of the
significant role of studying. For example, there was a poll conducted by a
university newspaper columnist in Seoul University in 2016 with social science
professors as respondents. The purpose of the survey was to understand the
consensus view of grading system as a professor. The majority of respondents
answered that they agreed with (agreed는 거의 항상 with가 따라옵니다) the
system in place of scoring with their absolute perspectives. An overwhelming
72% had responded that they agreed. Many of them said that the scoring by
personal views could result in many errors. This survey proves that giving
grades will promote studying.
In a nutshell, providing students with grades
has many advantages than offering absolute and personal scores. In this regard,
I firmly believe that students will feel achievement and desire to study when
they have grades.
