In the reading passage,
there is ample support for the author's claim that the fact that massive herds
of bison in the American Midwest were nearly extinct by the end of the 19th
century could be explained by some theories. However, the professor in the
lecture gives several reasons as a rebuttal to the author's point.
First, the professor
contends that it does not make sense that overhunting is one of the reasons for the
bison's massive death. This is because it was impossible for only a few
thousand hunters to kill a number of the bison such as 60 million. This casts
doubt on the reading passage's claim that the bison was almost extinct by
overhunting because bison leather was very popular at that time.
Next, the professor
insists that drought could not be another possible cause of the large decrease
of the number of the bison because a long period of drought is common in the American
Midwest and the American bison have even survived for more than 10 thousand
years in harsher condition. This counters the reading passage's assertion that
an extended period of drought gave rise to the large quantity of death of the
bison.
Finally, the professor argues that it is
implausible that disease was related to near extinction of the bison. While the
number of the bison had decreased since the beginning of 19the century,
domesticated cows did not appear until the 1860s. This refutes the reading
passage's suggestion that the sharp decline in the number of American bison was
contributed by disease.
