Opinions maybe divided over whether it is
reliable for parent to limit the amount of time their children spend watching
television or movies. People of various ages and different walks of life may
take diverse positions on this controversial issue. We cannot deny the fact
that stress and creativity play an important role in our lives. Personally,
therefore, I disagree that parents should regulate the amount of time their
siblings spend watching television or movies.
To begin with, children have to enjoy their
free time with watching television programs and movies without interruption of
their parents. If younger people do not spend their time watching movies, it
makes them suffer from severe stress. Some people argue that regulation of
child's pastime helps him or her enhance a quality of life. Although their
assertions appear to be valid, they are mostly groundless and fall short of
perfection. Moreover, the following personal observation can reveal that
regulating their free time causes a lot of problems. For example, my younger
sister Julia used to enjoy watching TV program, Pororo. She watched it for an
hour everyday and she loved this program. However, when her parents forced her
not to watch Pororo because they were worried about her grades. Although they
expected enhancement of her grades, the fact that she could not enjoy watching
Pororo made her suffer from severe emotional stress. As a result, she could not
concentrate on her homework because of stress and thus her grades even were
down. This clearly proves that regulating child's free time brings about
negative results.
Second, if parents let their children watch
television and movies, it helps children improve their creativity. I read an
editorial from the Dong-A Daily News that is related to the topic. It describes
the results of a survey conducted by Seoul National University social science
researchers with more than 500 random children who was considered more creative
than normal children. Of 500 people surveyed, 80 percent of them answered that
they could get various information by watching movies and television programs
and it helped them think more differently than others. Some children added that
they could envision fantastic worlds by appreciating the movie, Harry Potter
and it made them think more creatively. They went on to say that their parents
did not ask them not to enjoy television programs and movies. As a result, they
could enhance their creativity. This clearly shows that it is important for
children to enjoy movies without parents' interruption
As mentioned above, based on my younger
sister Julia and the survey conducted by Seoul National University social
science researchers, I can conclude that it brings about negative effects on
the lives of children if their parents force them to stop watching television
or movies. |
