Some people think that universities should
spend more on libraries than on sports. They probably feel that universities
are where people research specific academics and learn about them. That is, they
are involved in only mental things. However, in my opinion, universities have responsibilities
for students to maintain health and improve their social relationships since they
have two roles mentally and physically.
To begin with, sports activities are
significantly important to maintain and promote students’ health. In modern
society, people are susceptible to feel pain on their legs since there are a lot
of sedentary occupations. It is able to cause severe diseases. Likewise, students
usually spend time for long time with sitting in order to study or research what
they are majoring in. That is exactly why sports are as important as libraries.
For example, when my sister was attending to a university, she often used to
stay at her university until late night. There were a bunch of complex and
difficult things to study since her major was related to law. One day, she started
to realize that her legs were somewhat swollen. When she went to see a doctor,
doctor said it resulted from lack of exercises. After that, she joined a
badminton club in her university. Before long, her legs recovered their
original figure and she felt much better. If the university didn’t have a badminton
club, then her legs would get hurt severely since there was few ways for her to
exercise in her spare time because of her tiring major.
On top of that, sports activities encourage
students to meet new people. Sports clubs at universities usually need multiple
people. This feature of the clubs makes students have large circles. To be
specific, when I was a senior, it was my biggest worry to make friends who have
a different major with mine. To resolve this problem, I joined a Japanese
fencing club. Even though it was the first time for me to learn fencing, a lot
of people there tried to help me a lot and they were kind to me. Through this process,
I could get close with people and I used to hang out with them after the fencing
club. This is a way how I could have friends from different majors.
To sum up, athletics make people healthier and
promote opportunities for social interplay among students. In this regard, I
think that universities should fund for students’ activities as much as for
their libraries.
