▶ Your Answer :
The reading
passage contends that there are several hypotheses to explain the phenomenon
known as ‘will-o-the-wisp’. On the other hand, the lecturer brings up several
reasons to contradict the arguments.
First,
the lecturer argues that chemical illumination is not convincing to one of
possible explanations. This is because researchers did experiments which is
used same gases in a laboratory. The results were that both gas was not
resemble. The gas called phospine is cool and green, while ‘will-o-the wisp’ is
yellow and warm color like candle. This refutes the reading passage’s assertion
that chemical illumination is plausible explanation.
Second,
according to the lecturer, it does not make sense that flying insects might be the
source of the lights. It is true that fireflies glim in the dark. However, they
are found in large area, while the mysterious light was not. Also, they look
like different from the light, because it looks like a small ball. In addition,
swarms of fireflies are synchronized, while the light is not. This casts doubt
on the reading passage’s argument that flying insects are one possible
explanation.
The
final point by the lecturer is that the barn owls are not the source of the
lights. The owls are entirely white. However, it needs straight light to
reflect in dim conditions. In this situation, people could watch another bright
light, also. This counters the reading passage’s claim that the owls cannot be
the cause of the anomalous lights.
