Some people think that mobile phones make
their life freer. However, I think mobile phones are rather suppressing our
life because of comparing with others and keeping unwanted contact with others.
First, mobile phones lead us to keep
finding differences between others. Before invent of the mobile phones, there
was less way to know other people's life. It could be known by certain methods
such as e-mail or face-to-face interaction. However as mobile phone users have
increased, it is easy to access others' like indirectly by diverse social
network services. Since most of the uploads on the SNS are to show-off, it
could make people discouraged by watching them. Also, it spurs people to change
as good as possible. For example, I could find myself depressed after watching
lots of people in the SNS that are seemed to be much happier than me. I tried
to be in a good way like them, so I dieted for a while but realized that being
a good way was not my heart but the service that has forced me to be much
better than other people, which results in suppression for myself.
Second, mobile phones surge uncomfortable
contact with people. Since mobile phones can be used almost anywhere, people
should be in all-time ready to contact with others, even though they want some
break time. I know this from my mom's experience. She told me that she wanted
to be fully excluded after her work hour, but it is hard to refuse the call
from her boss, so she sometimes missed the time without mobile phones. What I
mean is that despite mobile phones' convenience, paradoxically, it has been
worked as reducing freedom in life.
To sum up, using mobile phones induce
people to differentiate and increase unwilling contact. In this regard, I
strongly disagree with the statement that mobile phones have resulted in
freedom for people.
