Achieving
a goal through thriving, especially when the circumstances are not favorable,
is definitely worthy and meaningful to people. That is probably why the claim
argues that any means will be justifiable if the goal is worthy. However, I
disagree with the statement because the claim can involve several unexpected and
huge side effects such as damaging individual lives, causing unexpected losses,
and leading the projects not sustainable.
First
of all, one might say that bulldozing a project regardless of the foreseeable
drawbacks or pitfalls is essential to accomplish a project. This notion might
be true when especially the goal is worthy yet very challenging to attain. For
instance, the founder of a Korean car manufacturer – Hyundai Motors, had solved
a difficult problem by using this strategy. Mr. Jeong, the founder, once faced
a project ordered from the Korean government: making a land green in early
spring by using grass to welcome international VIPs. Many people gave up on
that project because it seemed impossible to have green grass at the time of
year; however, Mr. Jeong thought differently and solved the problem by using an
alternative method: he used a green wheat trees to embellish the land.
Consequently, the Korean government was able to welcome VIP visitors from other
countries with a green ground on an airport.
Even
though Mr. Jeong’s case might tell us that any means can be justifiable for a
certain worthwhile goal, people should be careful about using this strategy
because that propelling tactic can involve individual damages to some extent.
Building a pyramid in the ancient Egypt can be an example for this concern. It
is well known that more than a million people were forced to build up the huge
monumental architects in human history. Admittedly, the project – building
Pyramid – was a well worthy goal; however, we should consider that abundant
people were damaged in physically as well as mentally ways. The laborers were
literally forced to lift up the heavy blocks all day long. They did not take
any other opportunities for their occupations or their free time. Thus,
decision makers should assess whether or not their goals might have this type
of disadvantages when choosing the means.
In
addition, there may be unexpected losses when people use any means to achieve a
certain goal. In South Korea, one of the controversial construction projects is
to build up the second Lotte World – an amusement park like Disney Land. The
problem was the place to build, which is located near the capital city, Seoul.
Although many researchers has warned that the place is not stable enough to
have the enormously huge construction on the area due to its geological
limitations, the project owners have kept going because of the alleged
economical benefits from the park, using any means of the project such as
augmenting more than 50 cement trucks. The result nowadays, even though it is
still under construction, is that the area has been having strange empty holes
near the location, which make cars and pedestrians in danger. Thus, the project
is still a hot potato for people in terms of maintaining the project.
Lastly,
if the means for a goal is not enjoyable, that decision can cause the project unsustainable.
For instance, even though a project is well attained by utilizing any means,
the people who have done the job would not do it again if the means was unpleasant.
Suppose that you have a talented lawyer for your lawsuit case, and he made you
win. Nonetheless, if the processes you have been through with him were not
pleasant, you may not want to work with him again. Therefore, people also
consider this type of factor to decide means.
In
sum, even though any means seem to be justifiable for a worthwhile goal, I
disagree with the statement because it can involve unexpected and unwanted side
effects. These results can include, but are not limited to: the cases that the
means may damage individual lives, other cases that the means may cause
unexpected losses, and finally, diverse situations that the means can lead the
project unsustainable. Therefore, people should analyze the foreseeable effects
from choosing certain means for a project. |
