The speaker is saying
that educational institutions such as schools have a responsibility to dissuade
students from pursuing fields of study in which they are unlikely to succeed. Some
would contend that the purpose of education is generating a well-educated work
force for future society and industry and they also argue that students should
pursue fields of study which are promising. However, I think it should be
students who determine what career they would pursue because feeling of job
satisfaction is a subjective matter and a field of study which seems unlikely
lucrative or promising at one time might become promising for the following
decades.
Of
course, the importance of encouraging students to pursue the fields which would
bring them success should not be totally overlooked. Students don’t know
exactly what paths of careers exist and which one offers them a best
opportunity to succeed. Moreover, teachers know the talents of students better so
they would see the potential of student to succeed in a specific field. Thus, teachers
can suggest the best offer to students which path of career they should follow.
Nevertheless,
feeling of job satisfaction is a subjective matter and it should be students
themselves who choose their future career. For instace, there are many students
who want to become social, environmental or humanitarian activists of non-governmental
organizations in the future. For them, helping others and changing the world a
better place would be more important than their own worldly success. In this
sense, becoming an activist would not offer them a temporal success and
lucrative job opportunity, but students would feel satisfaction and pride for
their jobs if they chose that career path. Therefore, teachers and institutions
should not dissuade students to follow their hearts for future career.
In
addition, a field of study which seems unlikely lucrative or promising to
teachers at one time might become promising for the following decades and one
field which seems feckless at one time might become an irreplaceable factor to
lead the nation’s economy in the future. For instance, in 1980s and 90s, the
field of computer science and software engineering did not form such a big
industry like today. However, they become a big industry today and it is the
most rapidly chaning and growing industry in today’s society. If students who chose
the field of computer science in 1980s had been dissuaded by teachers at that
time, they would not be able to become leaders in information and computer
based society now. Therefore, educational institutions should allow students to
pursue a variety of fields so that they can contribute to society in diverse ways.
In
sum, educational institutions’ endeavor to dissuade students from pursuing unpromising
fields can be detrimental to both a students’ future job satisfaction and generating
workforces for nation’s future economy. Once again, it should be student themselves who
determine what career they would pursue as they would feel more satisfaction
and pride for their own lives by following “their hearts”.
