▶ Topic :
Arctic deer live on islands in Canada's arctic regions. They search for food by moving over ice from island to island during the course of the year. Their habitat is limited to areas warm enough to sustain the plants on which they feed and cold enough, at least some of the year, for the ice to cover the sea separating the islands, allowing the deer to travel over it. Unfortunately, according to reports from local hunters, the deer populations are declining. Since these reports coincide with recent global warming trends that have caused the sea ice to melt, we can conclude that the purported decline in deer populations is the result of the deer's being unable to follow their age-old migration patterns across the frozen sea. Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument. | |

▶ Your Answer :
According to the article, the author
claims that deer population is in decline because they are unable to follow the
migration pattern across the frozen sea. However, the author assumes three points
and then might be misleading readers. The first is that habitat for deer is
limited to certain areas. The second is that what local hunters reports saying is
trustworthy. Lastly, global warming melts ice in a scope that deer cannot
sustain their lives.
First of all, the author mentions
that deer habitat is limited to areas that have warm enough and cold enough
places. According to her/his lines of reasoning, their major food usually grows
in a certain places. However, the author fails to mention that they are the
only what they feed. In order to strengthen the article, the author needs to articulate
what are the lists they can feed and where they grow so readers can see the
argument be more persuasive.
Secondly, he/she believes what
local hunters said which is deer population is declining. However, the author’s
assertion is questionable. He/she does not mention where the local hunters live.
If the local hunters are all from one village, what author maintains has no
credibility. To solidify author’s assumption, he/she needs to provide where the
local hunters are from and the evidence needs to be collected from more number
of hunters from different locations.
Lastly, he/she asserts that global
warming has a huge impact on deer’s environment. The author’s assumption is
that since they usually reside in a certain places, they can’t sustain themselves
when temperature slightly increases. However, the author’s argument is faulty.
According to the article, he/she never has mentioned that deer cannot live in
other places such as extremely cold artic. To be more persuasive, the author
needs to show why deer cannot live in other places and why that is such a
critical factor for deer.
In conclusion, the author assumes three
points in this article that might mislead readers. The author believes deer has
a limited places they can live, local hunters are correct what they said, and
global warming has a severe impact on deer’s environment that they can’t
sustain their lives. | |
