My sample:
I have had a serious conversation with my dad recently at home. Dad was very concerned about me because I was spending too much time on the Internet playing computer games. He told me that I was a big boy now and that I should be responsible for myself. He also said that he was disappointed with me because I was addicted to the games and had neglected my schoolwork. My father is usually an easy-going, cheerful person and I have never seen him so serious. I was scared at first. I felt really bad when I realized how much I have hurt him. I promised to dad that I would give up the computer games and focus on my study. And I have kept my promise so far. I remember the conversation not only because it took place recently but also because it was the first time that my father talked to me in a man-to-man manner. I am a man now and there is responsibility to take.
1. What are the most frequent topics of conversation that people (in your country) talk about? FQx2
Well, the students will talk about their schoolwork, their classmates and their teachers. The adults will talk about their families and the price at the supermarket, I guess.
2. Can you think of any situations when two strangers might engage in a conversation? FQx2 (Note: It doesn't have to be an extended conversation.)
When two strangers meet at a party, or when they are the only people waiting for a train at the railway station, they might engage in a conversation.
3. Compare (the differences) between the different kinds of conversations that you have (or, a typical person has) with the different (types of) people in your life. FQ
With children who are studying at school, I would talk about their schoolwork with them. With adults, I would talk about their families, their husband or wife, and kids.
4. Is there much difference between men and women when they have a conversation with other people of the same gender?
Yes. When women get together, they like to talk about beautiful clothes, the cosmetics, etc, while men tend to be more concerned about the stock market or politics.
5. Do men and women usually talk about the same topics (when they are speaking to other people of the same gender)?
No. When women get together, they like to talk about beautiful clothes, the cosmetics, etc, while men tend to be more concerned about the stock market or politics.
6. Why do you think men and women are different in this way?
I guess it has something to do with the division of labor. Women are supposed to enjoy life and wear pretty clothes, while men are supposed to make money to support the family. So that’s why they are concerned about the stock market.
7. What are the differences between (advantages and disadvantages of) telephone conversations and face-to-face conversations? FQx2
A telephone call is easier and you can make it anytime, anywhere. But a face-to-face conversation is more intimate, although you have to make the visit in person.
8. Do you think communication between nations can help to avoid war? FQ
Yes, I mean, if there is more communication and understanding between nations, there would be fewer wars for sure. Most wars are caused by misunderstanding between nations.
