Setting
Up Your New Laptop
A Step-by-Step Guide
A Start your laptop computer by pushing the
power button in the upper right-hand corner of the keyboard. Be patient, as it
may take a few minutes to load.
B When prompted, designate a password for
yourself as the administrator of the computer. For security reasons, do not
share your password with others.
C Take some time to familiarise yourself with
the programs and applications on your laptop computer. Use the user manuals
available in the “help” section of each software program.
D Change your desktop appearance by uploading a
favorite photograph and/or arranging the icons. Personalising your desktop will
not only make your laptop computer more visually appealing, but will make it
easier to find what you need.
E Next, you’ll want to organise your files into
the document, pictures, and video folders. Within each folder you also have the
option of creating sub-folders to better categorise your data.
F It’s also a good idea to adjust the general
settings for your laptop computer in the system preferences section. Set the
timing and image for your screensaver, change the security settings, schedule
computer maintenance, and much more.
G Finally, determine what type of backup
storage you will use. If you plan to keep your data in cloud storage, download
the latest version of the relevant application and back up your device
immediately. If you are using an external hard drive, back up your laptop
computer onto that.
