Poverty has been
long lasting problem that has been around for centuries. Even today, there are
millions of people suffering in poverty no matter how economically developed
the country is. Some people say the economic growth is the only solution to the
eradication of poverty, and the others say it is a major cause of environmental
destruction.
To begin with,
the issue of poverty may be blamed on the stagnation of economic growth in many
third world countries around the world. However, it is an undeniable fact that
the poverty also exists in many developed countries such as the united states
of America. Most prevalent economic system around the world tends to favor the
ones with capital rather than ones in poverty. This could be the reason why
people often say, “the rich become richer and poor become poorer.” I believe
that economic growth can be one solution towards eradication of poverty, but I
do not agree with the fact that it is the only way to end poverty.
Secondly, many
environmentalists argue that economic growth causes destruction of the
environment. It is true that since the time of industrial revolution, growth of
economy involved destruction of many forests and natural habitat. However,
economic growth is not always a threat to the environment. The industrial era
has ended and world is now moving towards information technology which does not
involve a major destruction of the environment. In Korea, tourism is a huge
part of the economy, and efforts are made to actually preserve the nature
instead of destroying it.
In conclusion, economic growth can take part in
eradication of poverty but it is not the only solution. Also, industrial
development in an effort to aid economy may have involved some destruction of
the nature, but with the end of industrial era, economic growth does not always
involve environmental destruction. For these reasons, I do not agree with the
fact that economic growth is the only solution to end poverty, and also the
fact that it involves major destruction of the nature.
