It is a common belief that people
learn a foreign language only for travel to or work in a foreign country.
However, there is a more persuasive argument that people reckon (구어에 해당하므로, 가급적이면 사용하지 않는 게 좋습니다.) that they study
other languages for many other reasons including travel and work. My opinion is
leaned to the latter.
On the one hand, there are those who acquire
languages to go to other countries for a journey or work purposes. Not to mention
the fact that if people want to go to any other countries, they should know the
way which is how to speak the countries’ language. For example, there are a
great number of people, who have a plan to travel to somewhere, learning
language by going to private institutes or by baking online lectures. This shows
that main reasons why people learn a foreign language are that they are to be capable
of staying at other countries.
Nevertheless, it is true that there should be different
reasons why learning languages (~해야 한다와는 아무런 관련이 없습니다. 있나 없나가 중요해요.). Take the people who enjoy studying for example,
they dream of watching foreign movies or drama without subtitles even though
they do not have a plan to leave their own country. They are able to satisfy
with themselves when improving their language skills. This shows that there are the
number of people who learn a foreign language for a sense of achievement.
In conclusion, the fact, that a majority of people
learn a foreign language to stay a foreign country for travel or work purposes,
is definitely true, but it is also undeniable that there are people who study
other languages for feeling self-satisfaction.
