Art and music classes should not be mandatory at school. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Most of schools in South Korea actually have art and music classes in school, and some people claim art and music classes are not necessary for students to learn at school while others are against it. However, I personally believe that it has to be mandatory to have art and music classes at school. Then why does it have to be compulsory?
First of all, art and music classes help for students to relieve their stress whenever they draw picture or play instruments. In general, students get stressed while they learn regular subjects such as science and math due to high level and large quantity of knowledge that they have to memorize and remember. However, art and music subjects do not require as much of brain activities for memorizing as regular subjects. According to a club survey in one of high school in Korea, even about 70% of students responded arts or music classes are necessary at school although they are busy with studying for university. They added those classes are helpful for reducing anxiety.
Secondly, arts and music classes provide an opportunity to for students to find their aptitude and talents. As most of adolescents are in a period of ‘keep looking for their future jobs’, they may find their aptitude during those classes and it may lead to their career. Moreover, some psychologists said it is important to learn various subjects in school including art and music because it actually provides broader and richer information of our society structure so that it does an important role for choosing their future job combining their talents with social trend.
To sum up, art and music classes are helpful for relieving stress and those can also be an opportunity to find students’ aptitude. For these two reasons, I agree with that art and music classes have to be mandatory at school.
