While living in a world of interconnected
web, with emergence of various social network applications, we are now able to
communicate with not only friends, but strangers living thousands of miles
away. Although some people argue that social network services(SNS) enable us to
explore diversity, in this essay, I would like to put an emphasize on its
downside.
It is true that SNS allows users to exchange
different knowledge and sometime build relationship with the others. However,
the way in which services work can also dissect our society. The reason is because
they are designed to show only interested information and recommend users who
share common opinion. For example, in Twitter and Facebook, If there’s someone
who has different political bias, they can simply ‘unfollow’ or ‘dislike’ his
posts which never be seen again on recommendation feed. Therefore, by shutting
own ears and eyes towards opposite views rather than openly discuss about, this
is likely to polarize community.
Moreover, spending time on the internet might
cause problem on not only individuals but people around them. while focusing too
much on online relationship, it is possible that they pay less attention to precious
people around them. Secondly, whereas some SNS, like Tinder, matches two strangers
who are looking for love connection, meeting unidentified person can be risky. For
instance, a British teenage traveler was murdered by random guy that she met
on Tinder. And I imagine that without careful
verification of each user, it’s likely that this tragedy can be repeated.
To conclude, yet SNS provides big windows
for users to be connected and share their views, I believe that we also need to
deeply concern about its probable side effects in order to keep individual safe
and society congruous. |
