The pie graph illustrates the principal causes why farmland loses its productivity and the table presents the proportions of land in three different areas such as North America, Europe, and Oceania degraded by these reasons over the 1990s. At first glance, it is clear that over-grazing is the principal reason of land degradation and Oceania continent was affected mostly by this reason. Over-grazing is responsible for 35% of degradation, while 30% of farmland becomes less productive due to over-cultivation. Regarding the table, in the 1990s, nearly one-tenth of the land in Oceania was degraded, among which almost 11% was caused by over-grazing. Conversely, just 5% of land in North America was destroyed by degradation, mainly as a result of over-cultivation (accounting for 3.3%). On the other hand, although deforestation is only occupied 28% of total causes, it had the biggest contribution with 9.8% in Europe, where more or less a quarter of land was degraded during the period. Overall, even though over-grazing, over-cultivation and deforestation all contribute to land degradation, the effects of these factors varied considerably in the three regions.
