The pie charts illustrate the proportion of
water usage for industrial, agricultural and domestic purpose in six areas of
the world.
The vast majority of water consumption in
South America, Africa, Central Asia and South East Asia is for agriculture. By
contrast, most of the water in North America and Europe go to industry.
The agricultural water usages in Central
Asia, Africa, South East Asia and South America account for 88%, 84%, 81% and
71% respectively, which is the biggest part of the whole usage. By contrast,
the opposite trends can be seen in the two other countries. The highest water
consumption in North America and Europe is for industry, accounting for 48% and
53% respectively.
Such dramatic differences are not seen when
we look at the percentage of domestic water use. The figure for South America,
Europe and North America are a little higher than the other three countries, accounting
for 19%, 15% and 13%. The respective proportion of water consumed by Africa,
Central Asia and South East Asia for industry are 9%, 7% and 7%. |
