Overall, most of durable consumer goods were increasing despite except new possessions such as video, dishwashers. It is interesting to note that, television was the most British household held and whereas telephone and central heating were showed the a biggest change in number within the projected periods.
In 1972, 93% of British homes had a television, and this increased to 98% in 1983. Furthermore, vacuum cleaner and the refrigerator were owned by majority of households as those accounted for over 90% of households by end of the period. Washing machines were recorded for as the 4th most common item in Britain with 66% of households had one in 1972, which rose to 80% by 1983.
In contrast, dishwasher and video were the latest possession and the lowest percentage of possession in the UK households, as the former items were acquired since 1978 with by 3% of households in 1978 whereas the latter items were acquired in 1983 with recorded 18% of owing by British households in 1983. There was a substantial increasing preference for possessing telephone and central heating where it initially had 42% and 39% respectively and increased to 77% and 64% by 1983.
