In many countries today, people in cities either
live alone or in small family units, rather than in large, extended family
groups. Is this a positive or negative trend?
As the agricultural society disappeared into the
history, the forms of a family dramatically changed from the big family to the small
family or single living. I believe that this tendency can cause negative impacts
on society.
First of all, the extensive family used to produce
abundant change to educate children by sharing lifetime lessons from the elderly.
As the human beings experience diverse and dramatic problems in their everyday
lives, the old culminate their valuable wisdom. However, the contemporary
society which has millions of tiny or single families does not provide such
proper opportunities to learn how to handle with personal problems. Thus, it
might not result in produce decent adults in the future as one of the members in
society.
Furthermore, the nuclear family can not support the family
members mentally. Specifically, the single person living alone has a high possibility
to suffer from the depression or constant desire to commit suicides easily based
on the lacks of the emotional and mental supports such as sharing lifetime
burdens in having causal conversations with their parents or siblings. Even if
the technology develops to contact friends or family members without being different
geographical locations, the physical touch and face-to-face conversations have
much more powerful, because it can render the emotionally vulnerable people to
feel safe and comfortable, unlike the digital comforts.
In conclusion, I argue that the current tendency
in decreasing the number of family members has negatively influenced the society,
because it can not produce proper educational changes as well as meaningfully
supportive conversations.
