As maintaining public health is getting important in society, many people claim that governments should implement a policy, reducing environmental and housing problems in order to prevent illnesses. I partly agree with this standpoint.
Solving environmental problems and improving residential condition could lessen the occurrence of illnesses since pollutants in air, water and soil has negatively influenced our health. Smog would be an example. As the urbanization has progressed, many factories have emitted minute particles in the air. Consequently, many people have suffered from respiratory and dermatological diseases. Meanwhile, housing condition, especially old-established water supply facilities, should be repaired so as to avert waterborne illnesses. As those outworn water distribution systems usually result in mold and bacteria, they could be rapidly evolved into viruses.
To improve the efficiency of protecting public health from diseases, other measures also need to be considered. First of all, governments should educate people, lunching a public campaign via mass media to raise the awareness of sanitation. With these efforts, government could effectively control personal hygiene in school and family, preventing people from any germs. Secondly, free vaccination and regular checkup service should be provided to citizens, especially the unprivileged. If the price of inoculation and health examination is prohibitively expensive for those with lower income, they are likely to lose a timely medical treatment, hurting not only their individual’s health but also public health as well.
In conclusion, preventing illnesses is one of the most important tasks of governments. There should be timely treatments for citizens for reducing social cost of medical care. Against this backdrop, to reduce disease outbreaks, both of fundamental and practical approaches should be taken an account.
