Q. Nowadays online shopping is extremely popular.
Discuss the impact of it on the environment and on people, who lost their jobs
because of it.
Online market is attracting more and more customers with its convenience and easy access. However, we should also consider the negative side effects it may bring to the environment and local job market.
The main environmental concern of online shopping is CO2 emission in the process of delivery. When people go shopping in their neighborhood, they usually drive a relatively short distance or do not use a vehicle. In contrast, logistics is essential in online shopping and the use of fossil fuel for delivery trailers is inevitable. This point may look trivial, but as bigger the scale of online market is, that of CO2 emission will get more significant.
In addition, online shopping increases wastes more than shopping in real market. Items ordered in online shops are enclosed by packaging, many of which are necessarily made of multiple layers of plastic and vinyl to protect the contents during transportation. Most of those packaging materials produced for online shopping parcels are hardly reusable and it incurs environmental costs to process and recycle them.
Aside from environmental problems, purchasing items online also causes unemployment in local community. Using internet for shopping means that the shoppers can find the goods they want from the wider online market beyond local one in their geographic community. As a result, online shopping impoverishes local businesses and leads to unemployment of people involved in them.
In conclusion, online shopping unavoidably has some environmental social effects. Its delivery process arises CO2 emission and produces excessive waste from packaging. Buying products online also tends to deprive jobs from employees in local businesses.
