Universities should accept equal numbers of male and female students in every subject. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Personally, I think an opportunity of education should be given to all people equally irrespective of their genders. However, I do not agree with the idea of enrolling the same proportion of male and female students in every university subject.
To begin with, accepting an equal number of each gender in all degree courses is unfeasible. The percentage of enrollment in each course would depend on the applications that the university receives. Thus, it would need enough men and women applicants if a college decided to fill courses with equal numbers of each gender. Realistically, however, almost all courses are more preferable for one gender than the other, and it would be impossible to recruit students in equal proportions. For example, since engineering majors tend to attract male applicants, filling these courses with females for the rest of 50% would be impractical.
Apart from the practical concerns expressed above, admission to university courses depending on gender would be unfair for both men and women. Universities should continue to select the best candidates for each course according to their qualifications. In this way, all applicants have the same opportunities, and students can realize that they will enter their desired majors if they study hard to achieve good grades at school. If a male student is the best candidate for a place on a course, it would not be right to reject him in favor of a female student with lower grades or fewer qualifications.
In conclusion, the selection of university applicants should be based on merit, and accepting students on the basis of their genders would be both impossible to realize and unjust.
