Many
people have different views about the existence of zoos. While some people
argue that zoos have a negative effect on animals, other believe advantages form
the maintenance of zoos. I will discuss about benefits and drawbacks of zoos
and suggest my own view.
It
is true that living in a zoo is no more that the captivity. While the environment
in zoos which fostered by humans is imitated the place where animals had lived
before, they cannot move freely and need to follow the rule which human made. As
a result, animals in zoos might lose their characteristics and tend to behave
as an abnormal animal. Many documentaries have reported this phenomenon. For instance,
shark in a zoo did not eat any prey given by human. Therefore, living in a zoo
deter animals from the nature of them
On
the other hand, zoos play an important role on preservation for endangered
animals. As the environment has rapidly changed, many wild species cannot afford
to cope with it. The serious problems such as droughts, floods or starvation occurred
in the nature make animals to become endangered or extinct. However, the life
in zoos enable them to increase the life expectancy by providing enough prey or
ensuring the safe condition for them. Furthermore, many zoos in the world try
to protect endangered species and promote the reintroduction project. In other
words, zoos provide the better condition to survive from now and the future.
While zoos deprive the freedom of animals by captivity, it is obvious
that the environment provided by zoos is more suitable for survival. Therefore,
I believe that living in a zoo is one of the efficient ways to protect them
from the extinction and ensure the opportunity that wild species might be able
to reintroduced in the future.
