In some countries,
criminal trials are shown on television for the public. Do the advantages
outweigh the disadvantages?
As people can observe the events that criminals stand trials
on television, their negative (굳이 네거티브로 한정지을 건 없어보입니다.) awareness of crime would rise. However, from my
perspective, showing criminal trials on television would have more negative
impact than benefits.
First of all, the exposure of criminals’ individual
information might pose a significant threat to people who are closed to them,
such as family and friends. People would generally suppose that a person’s
character, tastes and behaviours resemble those of the person’s family and
friends. In this regard, broadcasting criminal trials to the public could
arouse the negative stereotypes of individuals who are intimately related to the offenders. Besides, they may become a target of victims for revenge for
perpetrators, which could result in serious injury, trauma or even death.
As far as the other reason is concerned, the crime rate would possibly
increase when the public witness light punishment against criminals. Most of the
individuals would not be familiar to the law and rule which would influence in
the level of penalty. For this reason, a milder punitive action t than personal expectation
would undermine the seriousness of anti-social activities. Consequently, the
fear of punishment would also be curtailed and, as a result, the possibility of
people engaging in illegal actions would increase.
In conclusion, it is true that watching criminal trials on
television would bring about both a positive and a negative impact on the public
and society. However, repercussion of this option would surpass the advantages in
terms of the menace against malefactors’ closed people and rise in crime
rate.
