Some linguistic specialists strongly assert
that children have to learn foreign languages at elementary school because it
could provide them with many a lot of benefits. However, my viewpoint is completely
incompatible with the optimistic suggestion on the early childhood foreign
language education, since from my perspective, it is obvious that the drawbacks
outweigh the merits. In this essay, I will first take a closer look at its negative
aspects and suggest my opinion on the issue.
It is
undeniable that children studying at first and junior school are not well
prepared to be proficient in foreign languages because they do not have a
linguistic ability to understand complicated structures and elaborate
grammatical matters of other languages. Furthermore, it is generally accepted
that they do not sufficiently formulate a mindset and way of thinking with even
their native language. Accordingly, it is definite that children are not ready
to learn and acquire foreign language skills and they need to focus on more and
more their mother tongue. <(why is this paragraph a negative aspect?)
Besides,
when young primary students with a lack of linguistic competence receive another
language, as a necessary consequence, they will inescapably experience a
variety of confusion in both native and other tongues. Moreover, they are
suffering from diverse kinds of mental disorders and stress caused by rat race
for entrance into top schools.<(이게 다른 언어를 배우는 것 과 어떤 연관성이 있나요?) Consequently, a foreign tongue curriculum in elementary
school would burden the students academically and psychologically on them, which could
aggravate their painful situations.
In conclusion, as can be seen above,
foreign language training at early age will cause linguistic insecurity and
heavy academic and mental strains on children. In other words, its
disadvantages overpower benefits. Hence, governments should crack down teaching of foreign languages in
primary school to lighten the learning quantity. In addition, national
institutions have to encourage elementary schools to operate more and more
educational programs about native languages as the priority to prevent linguistic
disorder of children between mother tongue and second ones.
