Overall, in the first 5 years, butter was
the most popular spread. However, after that, its consumption significantly decreased
until 2007, becoming the second popular one. The use of margarine fluctuated from
1981 to 2001, after which dropped sharply until 2007, outnumbered by low fat
spreads in 2001. People started to use low fat & reduced spreads in 1996

The consumption of butter was the highest
in 1981, with around 140 grams and increased to peak at about 160 grams in 1986,
but after which it continued to drop for the rest of the period, surpassed by that
of margarine in 1991. The amount of margarine spent fluctuated between 80 to
100 grams for the first 2 decades, after which decreased to hit a low of 40
grams in 2007,
Whereas, people started to use low fat
& reduced spreads from 1996 and its consumption shot shoot up considerably since
then and reached the highest point of about 80 grams in 2001, before falling to
about 70 grams in 2007, nonetheless, maintaining the status of top selling
