Your Answer ▼ It is a common belief that these days there are no things people can choose by themselves. However, I firmly believe that nowadays people have unprecedented number of options to select in many aspects of their lives, with development of technology and improved social equality. To begin with, technical advancement increased the types of products or services people can choose. Unlike the past, when people could only buy the items produced near their regions, these days they can get in touch with various foreign products, no matter how far they are from them. For example, a big online store like Amazon enables consumers to search whatever they want, and connect the sellers and the buyers in different countries. Plus, the time which is required for delivery is also shortened, so people can get the things they purchased only in a few days. Development in communication and transportation widened the room for people's choice from their adjacent areas to the globe itself. On top of that, people can choose their future career more freely than ever, as the society became more equal than ever. In most democratic countries, people can choose their jobs following their own dream regardless of their gender, race, or social class. Even though it seems natural, these kinds of liberty had relatively shorter history than other types of social structures. For a long time in human history, people had to choose their job following their parents, and their rights were strictly restricted by rigid class system. Most people except the privileged had to follow social customs and there was no freedom in choosing their leader, career, or even the place they live. To sum up, technological advancement and emergence of more equal society had significant effect on the number of choices people can select. For these reasons, it is evident that people in these days have much more options to choose in their lives than people in the past. |
